What is manga? A word you might hear Japanese pop culture fans toss around is 'manga.' What exactly is manga? Where anime is the Japanese equivalent of a cartoon, manga is the Japanese equivalent of a comic book. A lot of the time an anime series will be based on a pre-existing manga story. However, sometimes the reverse occurs. A manga will be made from an existing anime series.
